About Romanian

Romanian belongs to the Romance language family, meaning it has similarities in grammar, vocabulary and syntax to languages such as Spanish, French and Italian. It’s actually possible for Romanians to understand some Italian, but oddly this only works one way - Italians don’t find it as easy to understand Romanian. The language is also completely mutually intelligible with Moldovan. There are 4 main dialects of Romanian, with the Dacoromanian dialect forming the basis of the standard language.

Fun facts — Romanian

  • The name Romania comes from the Latin word ‘Romanus’, citizen of Rome.
  • Unusually for a Romance language, the definite article - 'the' - is added on to the end of a noun, so 'ceas' is ‘clock’ but 'ceasul' is ‘the clock’.
  • The phrase 'a avea pitici pe creier' - to have dwarfs on the brain - means to do or say something crazy.
  • Romanian is one of the very few Romance languages spoken in Eastern Europe.
