About Nepali

More than 120 different languages are spoken in Nepal but the national language Nepali is the most widely spoken. It is taught in schools and used in Government. Nepali is also spoken in Bhutan and in parts of India and Myanmar. It includes influences from Sanskrit and neighbouring Tibetic and Burmese languages. It also has similarities to Hindi which uses the same style of writing.

  • Some pronouns like 'he' and 'she' can have up to eight different forms depending on formality and whether the person being spoken about is nearby or far away.
  • Nepali speakers often confuse 's' and 'sh' sounds, pronouncing them both as 's'.
