Some accounts say nine; others 48; others still say 100! Language isn&#8217;t usually that easy to pin down though &#8211; &#8216;Eskimo&#8217; actually covers lots of different groups of people and if we&#8217;re getting philosophical, what do we mean by &#8216;word&#8217;? It&#8217;s probably fair to say though, that people do have lots of words for the things that affect them the most\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/snow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1507\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/snow.jpg\" alt=\"Snowflake\" width=\"550\" height=\"224\" data-wp-pid=\"1507\" style=\"margin-top:20px; margin-bottom:20px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>218 for Rain<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Weather inspires lots of new words. Some people have counted 218 words for rain, fog and mist in the <a title=\"Scots Gaelic\" href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/scotsgaelic\" target=\"_blank\">Scots<\/a> language! But the <a title=\"Hawaiian\" href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/hawaiian\" target=\"_blank\">Hawaiians<\/a> are also rain-obsessed &#8211; there are 139 words for rain, including some really specific ones like &#8216;nahua&#8217; for the &#8216;fine rain that accompanies the north-east trade winds along the northern part of Maui&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4 for Love<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a title=\"Greek\" href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/greek\" target=\"_blank\">Greek<\/a> offers four different words for love that range from &#8216;philia&#8217; (\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03af\u03b1), which means &#8216;friendship&#8217; in modern Greek, to &#8216;agap\u0113&#8217; (\u03b1\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7), which means &#8216;love&#8217; in the sense of &#8216;I love you&#8217;. Some might say that&#8217;s a very sensible distinction to make!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>46 for Camels<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Animals are important too. There are about 46 <a title=\"Somali\" href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/somali\" target=\"_blank\">Somali<\/a> words for camels in various stages of the reproductive cycle, but then this pales into insignificance when you consider that there are around 500 breeds of dog referred to in the English language!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/camel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1508\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/camel.jpg\" alt=\"Camels\" width=\"550\" height=\"224\" data-wp-pid=\"1508\" style=\"margin-top:20px; margin-bottom:20px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>Lots for Drunkenness<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">And of course, the <a title=\"British English\" href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/english\" target=\"_blank\">British<\/a> have hundreds of slang terms for being drunk, including &#8216;sozzled&#8217;, &#8216;pickled&#8217; and &#8216;wellied&#8217;, as well as lots of other bizarre words that were almost certainly dreamed up under the influence of alcohol themselves&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>And that&#8217;s not all&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If we think about it, there are actually lots of examples in English for this &#8211; for many words it would be quite easy to come up with at least a handful of others that mean something very similar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Take &#8216;angry&#8217;, for example; you could be miffed, frustrated, annoyed, furious or even incandescent. All these words express a slightly different degree of the same emotion, and this is just a selection.
