For those of you learning Spanish, here is a little cheat sheet to steer clear of future embarrassment:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When asking for a spoon at a restaurant, be sure to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bfPuedo tener una cuchara, por favor? = Can I have a spoon please?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And make sure not to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bfPuedo tener una cucaracha, por favor? = Can I have a cockroach please?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/embarrassed2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2571\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/embarrassed2-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Embarrassed\" width=\"270\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a>Also if you have made a mistake, spare yourself further embarrassment by saying:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estoy avergonzado = I am embarrassed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And be sure not to heighten your embarrassment by saying:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estoy embarazada = I am pregnant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(or even worse &#8211; <strong>Estoy embarazado = I am a pregnant man<\/strong>!)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you ask for an onion salad at a restaurant be sure to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bfPuedo tener una ensalada con cebolla? = Can I have a salad with onion?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And make sure not to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bfPuedo tener una ensalada con caballo? = Can I have a salad with horse?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then, if you\u2019re quite hungry after refusing to eat a horse, and you\u2019re a woman, be sure to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tengo hambre = I am hungry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And refrain from blurting out:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tengo hombre = I have\u00a0a man<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because that could invite some quizzical looks (especially from your date!)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also, if you arrive back from a long trip away from your parents, be sure to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estoy cansado = I am tired<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And spare them a cardiac arrest by avoiding the phrase:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estoy casado = I am married<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unless that is in fact the case\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, if you\u2019re exploring a mountain with your friend, be sure to specify whether you mean:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vamos a la cima = let\u2019s go to the summit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vamos a la sima = lets go to the chasm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Otherwise you could find yourself lost in the harsh landscape of Mount Everest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Any Spanish speakers out there with more examples to share?<\/p>\n<p>Cameron<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When learning a new language, one thing we all want to avoid is making a fool of\u00a0ourselves.
