{"id":277,"date":"2011-09-01T15:19:52","date_gmt":"2011-09-01T14:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/?p=277"},"modified":"2011-09-01T15:19:52","modified_gmt":"2011-09-01T14:19:52","slug":"theres-something-different-about-this-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/theres-something-different-about-this-one\/","title":{"rendered":"There&#8217;s something different about this one&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I see myself as a moderately well-travelled person, having visited most of Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and the southern states in the USA.\u00a0Many memories are made on each trip, whether they are about trying strange food, meeting friendly locals or even having the odd moment of hilarity \u2013 but one thing I always find is that confusion crops up about my ethnic appearance. I\u2019m not even sure if it&#8217;s in a good or bad way.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a British Born Chinese, speak English fluently and studied Spanish at university, so I am pretty comfortable with visiting most parts of the world. I don\u2019t have any qualms about learning even more languages, if it helps me get by.\u00a0But my appearance seems to evoke different\u2026. responses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/foto1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-283 alignright\" style=\"margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" title=\"Katie and friends\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/foto1-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Katie and friends\" width=\"252\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>For instance, a short conversation while getting coffee at a gas-stop in New Mexico left a cashier confused when she said I (apparently) spoke like the Queen.\u00a0Flip side to this: during a night out in Acu\u00f1a, Mexico, a bartender was surprised to be able to talk to me in great detail about how film director Robert Rodriguez used his tavern to film a part of his feature <em>Desperado<\/em>, as I was the only one who could speak and understand Spanish \u2013 something that also helped make a complaint about a dirty and unmade hotel room in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>A weird occurrence was when a tourist wanted a picture taken with me during a visit with friends to the Carlsberg Museum in Copenhagen.
