Photo: Esko Keski-Oja<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since 1985, the Council of the European Union has annually chosen a&nbsp;European Capital of Culture, to \u201chighlight the richness and&nbsp;diversity of European cultures\u201d, and to \u201cbring people from different European countries into contact with each other&#8217;s culture\u201d. My Finnish hometown of Turku, nestled in the midst of the picturesque archipelago of some 10,000 islands in the Baltic Sea is, along with the beautiful medieval town of Tallinn in Estonia, the European Capital of Culture for 2011.<\/p>\n<p>And what an exciting year it has already been for Turku. Photo: Samuli Saarinen&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The individual events have ranged from the beautifully ethereal exhibition <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turku2011.fi\/en\/876-shades-darkness_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">876 Shades of Darkness<\/a><\/em><em>, <\/em>contemplating<em> <\/em>the long dark nights of the Finnish soul, to the alfresco performances of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turku2011.fi\/en\/opera-dalvilda-abo_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Opera d\u2019Alvilda in Abo<\/a><\/em>, an Italian opera written in 1692, being performed in the grounds of the imposing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turku.fi\/en\/turkucastle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turku Castle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_382\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-382\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Hanna6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-382  \" title=\"Alvilda in Abo\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Hanna6-300x199.png\" alt=\"Alvilda in Abo\" width=\"270\" height=\"179\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Opera d'Alvilda in Abo. Photo: Kari Vainio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Historically Turku has embraced culture in all its forms, whether it be through a vibrant music scene centred around two annual music festivals occupying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbtl.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">town centre<\/a>&nbsp;and nearby island of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruisrock.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ruissalo<\/a>, or the numerous art and archaeological <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turuntaidemuseo.fi\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">museums<\/a>&nbsp;and impressive number of amateur theatres (I counted 13).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_384\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-384\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Hanna8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-384     \" style=\"margin-bottom: -10px;\" title=\"Anna Karenina\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Hanna8-300x200.png\" alt=\"Anna Karenina\" width=\"270\" height=\"180\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anna Karenina by Turun Kaupunginteatteri. Photo: Robert Seger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This tradition of theatrical performance in Turku is embodied in the rather bulky 60s concrete fa\u00e7ade of the much-loved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turku.fi\/Public\/Default.aspx?culture=en-US&amp;contentlan=2&amp;nodeid=4436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">municipal theatre<\/a>. Offering productions of both homespun and international favourites, the theatre\u2019s <em>Anna Karenina&nbsp;<\/em>has been extremely well received this year, earning accolades like the prestigious Thalia award for the 2011 Best Theatrical Performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every summer, the spirits of the medieval possess the cobbled streets of Turku\u2019s old town with the Medieval Market fair that habitually attracts around 100,000 visits over four days. Photo: Kari Vainio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the sympathetically restored and historic quayside, an old waterside factory now houses productions by the internationally acclaimed modern dance group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurinkobaletti.com\/index.php?page=eb75f8aa80d2e6a821117266a72b952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aurinkobaletti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next door, the prestigious (and always oversubscribed by aspiring undergraduates) Turku Academy of Art&nbsp;overlooks the symbolic heart of the city, the river <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aura_River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aura<\/a>. The adjacent city ferry \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkutouring.fi\/en\/s\/fori-city-ferry_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F\u00f6ri<\/a>\u201d takes passengers on a cultural voyage across the river: its distinctive yellow deck has acted as the setting for more than one art performance in the 90 seconds it takes to cross the river.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 2011 European Capital of Culture award has stimulated Turku\u2019s cultural heritage in new and novel ways, as the variety and sheer volume of productions and performances are acting to bring a new flavour, as well as a renewed vigour, to an already rich cultural landscape.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-388\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Hanna12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-388  \" style=\"margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" title=\"Turku street busker\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Hanna12-300x210.png\" alt=\"Turku street busker\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Turku street busker visited by a fan. Photo: Perttu Saksa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We must not forget that Turku and Tallinn will pass the mantle of the European Capital of Culture to the towns of Guimar\u00e3es and Maribor in 2012, and all Turku residents would urge their fellow Europeans to embrace the fascinating cultures of these towns with the same enthusiasm and interest that have been visited upon Turku and Tallinn over the past year.
