Which got us all thinking, how important can toast possibly be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Turns out, if you look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/english\" target=\"_blank\">English<\/a> language, it&#8217;s pretty important, as are all baked goods to the British mind. We pepper our conversation with references to bread, toast, cake and biscuits on a daily basis:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In this cold weather, you may have turned on the heating, so now you&#8217;re <b>as warm as toast<\/b>. Central heating really is<b> the best thing since sliced bread<\/b>. Going out in the cold again without a coat would be\u00a0a really\u00a0<b>half-baked idea<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Toast.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5045\" style=\"margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Toast.jpeg\" alt=\"National Toast Day\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" data-wp-pid=\"5045\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If you&#8217;re the <b>breadwinner<\/b> in the family, you&#8217;re the one bringing in the money. Your job&#8217;s your <b>bread and butter<\/b>. Maybe you&#8217;ve got several projects on the go at the same time, in which case <b>you&#8217;ve got your fingers in many pies<\/b>. Or maybe you&#8217;re from the\u00a0<b>Upper Crust<\/b>, in which case you may not need to work at all, and will hopefully\u00a0<b>know which side your bread is buttered<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If someone&#8217;s <b>brown bread<\/b> (a bit of Cockney rhyming slang, by the way), then they&#8217;re dead &#8211; or, if used as a threat, about to be dead. You can also say <b>they&#8217;re toast<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A simple task is <b>as easy as pie<\/b> or <b>a piece of cake<\/b>. If something sells fast <b>it sells like hot cakes<\/b>. <b>The icing on the cake <\/b>is<b> <\/b>a lovely, unexpected bonus to a project; the sarcastic alternative is <b>taking the biscuit<\/b>. When fortune spins the wheel of fate, that&#8217;s just <strong>t<\/strong><b>he way the cookie crumbles. <\/b>And if it goes badly for you, you might feel deflated, or<b> as flat as a pancake.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/10670263_885842481475083_3361376093522502331_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5046\" style=\"margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/10670263_885842481475083_3361376093522502331_n.jpg\" alt=\"Pancakes\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" data-wp-pid=\"5046\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It&#8217;s not just English speakers who love to talk about bread. The <a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/polish\" target=\"_blank\">Polish<\/a> equivalent of a &#8216;piece of cake&#8217; is a <strong>bu\u0142ka z mas\u0142em (bread roll with butter)<\/strong>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/spanish\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish<\/a>, someone living a life of luxury <strong>naci\u00f3 con el pan bajo el brazo (was born with bread under their\u00a0arm)<\/strong>. If you suspect someone of being up to no good, in <a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/swedish\" target=\"_blank\">Swedish<\/a> you can suggest that <strong>inte ha rent mj\u00f6l i p\u00e5sen (they don&#8217;t have clean flour in their bag)<\/strong> &#8211; and if you then need to seek revenge, you can demand in <a href=\"https:\/\/eurotalk.com\/en\/store\/learn\/italian\" target=\"_blank\">Italian<\/a> that the person who&#8217;s wronged you <strong>rendere pan per focaccia (to give back bread for focaccia)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Well, that&#8217;s probably enough: we don&#8217;t want to <strong>over-egg the pudding<\/strong>, so time now for us to <strong>shut our cake holes<\/strong>.
