{"id":5591,"date":"2016-10-14T15:38:01","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T15:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.utalk.com\/news\/?p=5591"},"modified":"2017-07-03T13:59:10","modified_gmt":"2017-07-03T13:59:10","slug":"birmingham-primary-school-student-wins-utalks-junior-language-challenge-2016-during-tense-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/birmingham-primary-school-student-wins-utalks-junior-language-challenge-2016-during-tense-final\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham primary school student wins uTalk\u2019s Junior Language Challenge 2016 during tense final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 9-year-old girl from Birmingham has won the UK\u2019s only primary school language challenge to be crowned 2016 winner and earn a family trip to Africa to see the work of charity onebillion in person.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s uTalk\u00a0Junior Language Challenge\u00a0for children aged 10 and under started in March and saw over 1,000 children representing more than 50 primary schools across the UK, learning Romanian, Korean and Swahilli for the final. Ritisha Baidyaray from the Blue Coat School in Birmingham beat off competition from 29 other finalists, including runners-up Farah Akbar from Nottingham and Grace Blackett from Welwyn.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ritisha.jpg\" alt=\"Ritisha Baidyaray, JLC champion 2016\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ritisha.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ritisha-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ritisha-700x467.jpg 700w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ritisha-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ritisha-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Ritisha &#8211; who won the JLC two days before her 10th birthday &#8211; said, \u201cI didn\u2019t think I was going to win, I just wanted to do my best and make my parents proud of me. I was really nervous but I just focused on the games, and when I realised I\u2019d won I felt ecstatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Channel 4\u2019s Child Genius winner Rhea was a special guest, handing out medals and the trophy. She said: \u201cI know a little something about academic competitions, so I know how hard the finalists have worked to get here and how much their parents and siblings have supported them along the way. I would love to have done something like the JLC \u2013 I\u2019m outside the age bracket now but I\u2019ll tell my brother to do it next year!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>uTalk\u2019s founder and chairman Dick Howeson says the Junior Language Challenge proves how open children are to learning more languages than the curriculum normally allows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s amazing how easily young children learn languages when they are given the freedom to play with them. I am passionate about throwing out the rule book to have fun with languages and the Junior Language Challenge proves this can work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All money raised goes to uTalk\u2019s sister charity <a href=\"https:\/\/onebillion.org\">onebillion<\/a>.
