And it\u2019s got me thinking about all the people who have helped me on my language learning journey, whether by <strong>teaching, correcting, encouraging<\/strong> or even just interacting with me, and making my trips that little bit more memorable. So I thought there\u2019s no better opportunity than now to send out some heartfelt words of thanks to everyone who, in a big or small way, have spurred me on to new levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So I\u2019d like to start with a \u2018<strong><em>grazie mille<\/em><em>\u2019<\/em><\/strong> to my old Italian teacher, who emphasised the value of finding language resources on subjects I was personally interested in, rather than the generic topics offered on the curriculum. And \u2018<strong><em>grazzi assai<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to the Sicilian family I au paired for when I first moved to Italy, who took me to every single event in the local calendar \u2013 from Catholic mass to an anti-mafia conference, to tours of orange groves \u2013 to ensure that I was completely immersed in the remote and rural Sicilian life they were kind enough to share with me. And a huge \u2018<strong><em>gr\u00e0tzias<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to Antonello, an ever-patient Sardinian, who let me ramble on for an hour every week for two years to practise Italian in the sadly lacking-in-Italian-speakers area of the UK I grew up in. \u2018<strong>\u0421\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0438\u0431\u043e<\/strong>\u2019 to the Russian stranger on the train who fortuitously took the seat beside me on my way to a Russian oral exam, who let me rehearse my presentation, and didn\u2019t mind that I was unwilling to talk about anything except the topic of the exam, which happened to be women\u2019s suffrage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6099 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ThinkstockPhotos-497537634.jpg\" alt=\"Seamless pattern of a group of hand drawn people holding &quot;thank you&quot; signs in different languages\" width=\"628\" height=\"586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ThinkstockPhotos-497537634.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ThinkstockPhotos-497537634-250x233.jpg 250w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ThinkstockPhotos-497537634-700x653.jpg 700w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ThinkstockPhotos-497537634-768x717.jpg 768w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ThinkstockPhotos-497537634-1536x1433.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ThinkstockPhotos-497537634-120x112.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019d like to say \u2018<strong><em>kiitos<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to my Karelian friends who helped while away the long Nordic winter nights by teaching me easy Finnish, which all these years later, magically comes back to mind whenever I meet a Finn. And \u2018<strong><em>gr\u00e0cies<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to Cristina, who took me shopping in Catalan when I first moved to London, and shared her love of obscure Catalan idioms with me. \u2018<strong><em>Dank u<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to the waitress in Ghent who politely explained that I\u2019d somehow been saying \u2018please\u2019 instead of \u2018thank you\u2019 in Flemish for my entire trip, and \u2018<strong><em>\u010fakujem<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to the hotel attendant in Bratislava on a recent journey, who was happy to slow his native Slovak to a snail\u2019s pace and embellish it with flamboyant gesticulations, so that I could check-in successfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Most recently, \u2018<strong><em>merci<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to the Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois gentleman who talked me through the surprisingly complex process of buying an airport bus ticket in Montreal, and explained in simple French which bus I needed and when it would arrive. Then chatted away extensively about the state of public transport, which was actually quite refreshing, as it was the first real conversation I\u2019d had all day as a lone tourist in a large city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>\u2018<\/em><strong><em>Dankon<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em> to all those people with whom I am looking forward to creating lasting memories on my Esperanto journey, and <em>thank you<\/em> to everyone else who has made my life better by talking to me in another language, and sharing something of theirs with me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Nat &#8211; <em>Language Producer\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our word of the month for the #LanguageDare is \u2018Thank you\u2019 (as all of you who have bravely posted your social media entry will already know).
