{"id":6367,"date":"2018-09-18T09:23:58","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T09:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.utalk.com\/news\/?p=6367"},"modified":"2020-07-06T09:22:52","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T09:22:52","slug":"what-colour-is-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/what-colour-is-this\/","title":{"rendered":"What Colour is This?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MIZU.png\" alt=\"MIZU\" class=\"wp-image-6369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MIZU.png 800w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MIZU-250x156.png 250w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MIZU-700x438.png 700w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MIZU-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MIZU-120x75.png 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This colour hasn\u2019t got an exact name in English but it has in Japanese \u2013 it\u2019s called <em>mizu&nbsp;<\/em>which translates as water.&nbsp; (We\u2019d probably bundle it under the umbrella term of light blue.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study published in The Journal of Vision discovered that the word <em>mizu<\/em> has been adopted by Japanese speakers over the last 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different countries have different basic colour terms.&nbsp; But in general, industrialised countries have names for these 11 colours: black, white, red, yellow, blue and green, brown, pink, orange, grey and purple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some countries &#8211; like Japan &#8211; have extra ones, particularly for shades of blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Russians have \u0433\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0431\u043e\u0439 (<em>golubo<\/em><em>\u012d<\/em>) for light blue and \u0441\u0438\u043d\u0438\u0439 (<em>sini<\/em><em>\u012d<\/em>) for dark blue.<\/li><li>Italians have a general name for blue \u2013 <em>blu&nbsp;<\/em>\u2013 but also <em>azzurro&nbsp;<\/em>(light blue) and <em>celeste&nbsp;<\/em>(sky blue\/pale blue).<\/li><li>Modern Greek also has \u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03ac\u03b6\u03b9\u03bf (<em>galazio<\/em>) for light blue and \u03bc\u03c0\u03bb\u03b5 (<em>ble<\/em>) for dark blue.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>And the differences in colour terms between languages don\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many languages have the same word for blue and green, some use different words for light red and dark red and there are even colours which vary in name depending on the texture they\u2019re describing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, researchers have also found that if a language only has two terms for colours they are always black and white\/dark and light.
