UK youngsters, who have clocked up three new languages in nine months, are now just weeks away from the Final of a national language learning competition.<\/p>\n

Top prize in the uTalk Junior Language Challenge 2018 Final, on Fri Nov 9 at London\u2019s Olympia, is a family holiday of a lifetime to Africa.<\/p>\n

But, to be in with a chance of winning, the 32 finalists now have to get to grips with Kinyarwanda – a national language of Rwanda, Africa.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the third language they\u2019ve had to learn for the competition, following on from Khmer, the official language of Cambodia, and Spanish, as spoken in Spain.<\/p>\n

Things they\u2019ve learnt include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. In Kinyarwanda, you can say \u2018I don\u2019t understand\u2019 with just one word Simbyunva<\/em>.<\/li>\n
  2. Khmer uses a very different writing system e.g. \u2018hello\u2019 is [\u179f\u17bd\u179f\u17d2\u178f\u17b8].<\/li>\n
  3. The Spanish use two exclamation marks at a time \u2013 like in the word \u00a1<\/em>Socorro!\u00a0<\/em>meaning help!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Well done to the finalists for getting this far. But, with more than 2,300 primary school-age children entering this year\u2019s challenge, we\u2019d like to congratulate all the other entrants as well.\u00a0 We hope you enjoyed it and that it\u2019s helped make language learning fun!<\/p>\n

    Giving children a chance to unlock their talent for language is why we set this competition up more than ten years ago.<\/p>\n

    We also use every penny of the entry fee to support the charity onebillion<\/a> which works to educate children in developing countries. (We throw in all the language learning software and our time for free.)<\/p>\n
