And if you don\u2019t have the ability to travel the world (which none of us really do right now!), then an easy way to get a glimpse into the culture of a place is by taking a look at the media they produce. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/utalk.com\/news\/2019\/08\/30\/latin-at-the-movies\/\"><em>It\u2019s also a good way to improve your language skills<\/em><\/a><em>! While the film we\u2019re going to talk about here wasn\u2019t produced exclusively by the country in question, it still offers a rarely-seen insight through the lens of a huge, world-renowned franchise. Now, buckle up!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you\u2019ve been living under a rock for the past nineteen years, it\u2019s likely you\u2019ve heard of the <em>Fast and Furious<\/em> movie franchise. If you haven\u2019t, well, no worries, we can give you a one-sentence summary: these films are about a bunch of people who drive really fast and get really mad about stuff. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a little more to them than that though, really. There are lots of cars and arguments, of course, but there are also plenty of lessons about the importance of loyalty and family. You might notice we\u2019ve mentioned nothing about language learning. Well, despite the fact that the third film was set in Japan, there really isn\u2019t any.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to despair! The first spin-off film in this series \u2013 <em>Fast and Furious presents Hobbs and Shaw<\/em> &#8211; was released last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/fast_and_furious_presents_hobbs_and_shaw\">to generally positive reviews<\/a>. While it was exciting in its own right (so many people went flying through <em>so many windows!<\/em>), it also took the time to showcase Samoan culture, led by Dwayne \u2018The Rock\u2019 Johnson, who just happens to be half-Samoan himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"videoWrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HZ7PAyCDwEg\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In keeping with the rest of the franchise, family plays an important role in this film \u2013 making Samoa and Samoan culture the perfect way to show this recurring theme in a new light. \u2018Aiga \u2013 family \u2013 is one of the cornerstones of Samoan culture. The term itself refers to a wide group of people connected by more than just blood \u2013 marriage, adoption, all these things bring them together around the matai, the head of the \u2018aiga. Members of an \u2018aiga can be called back to the matai\u2019s residence, no matter where they live, to deal with family affairs, and in fact, family being important is also part of fa\u2019a Samoa \u2013 the Samoan way.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back to the film \u2013 the final third of the story sees Johnson\u2019s character, Hobbs, return to his Samoan roots and his estranged \u2018aiga coming together to help defend him and his partner, Shaw. <a href=\"https:\/\/filmkauai.com\/movies-television-shows-filmed-kauai\/\">Although these scenes were filmed in Hawaii<\/a>, rather than Samoa, they are still full of Samoan culture and language, things that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/entertainment\/film\/114599755\/dwayne-the-rock-johnson-honours-his-samoan-roots-in-hobbs--shaw\">Johnson has obviously taken pride in sharing with the world<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is your interest piqued in learning some Samoan, yet? Although Johnson speaks some Samoan himself, there were also experts present on set to help out, making sure that the language \u2013 at least \u2013 was as accurate as possible. You might hear malosi, meaning strong, or soia (stop), but the word that stands out most is probably uso, which means brother.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, kind of.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a very versatile term in Samoan, <a href=\"https:\/\/1samoana.com\/how-to-use-the-samoan-word-uso\/\">used both by men, when referring to their brothers, but also by women who are referring to their sisters<\/a>.
