You\u2019ve come to the right place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spoken in Catalonia, Valencia, Andorra, the Balearic Islands and parts of Sardinia, Catalan is a Romance language most closely related to Occitan, although it also shares many similarities with Spanish, Italian, and Sardinian. Catalan boasts around ten million speakers and plays a key role in the Catalan national identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, we\u2019ve gathered some phrases from our app we think might come in handy the next time you have a chance to speak Catalan. Check them out and see which ones you still have to learn!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"0-basic-phrases-\"><strong>Basic phrases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Hola &#8211; Hello<\/li><li>S\u00ed &#8211; Yes<\/li><li>No &#8211; No<\/li><li>Si us plau &#8211; Please<\/li><li>Gr\u00e0cies &#8211; Thank you<\/li><li>De res &#8211; You\u2019re welcome<\/li><li>Perdoni &#8211; Excuse me<\/li><li>Ho sento &#8211; Sorry<\/li><li>Ad\u00e9u &#8211; Goodbye<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are mostly one-word or very short phrases that you\u2019ll come across early in your language-learning journey. Already know a little Spanish or Italian? They should be nice and easy for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-language-related-help-\"><strong>Language-related help<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>No l\u2019entec. &#8211; I don\u2019t understand.<\/li><li>No ho s\u00e9. &#8211; I don\u2019t know.<\/li><li>Parli m\u00e9s a poc a poc, si us plau. &#8211; Please speak more slowly.<\/li><li>M\u2019ho pot repetir, si us plau? &#8211; Can you repeat that, please?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, <em>no ho s\u00e9<\/em> can be helpful in all kinds of situations, but the other three phrases here are handy to have under your belt from the start. Asking people to slow down or repeat things in Catalan should keep them speaking to you in the language, so you can keep getting the practice you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"2-getting-around-\"><strong>Getting around<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>On s\u00f3n els serveis? &#8211; Where are the toilets?<\/li><li>On \u00e9s el banc? &#8211; Where is the bank?<\/li><li>esquerra &#8211; left<\/li><li>dreta &#8211; right<\/li><li>Giri a l\u2019esquerra. &#8211; Turn left.<\/li><li>Giri a la dreta. &#8211; Turn right.<\/li><li>Segueixi tot recte. &#8211; Go straight ahead.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The first two phrases are handy because you can use <em>on s\u00f3n\/\u00e9s<\/em> and then wherever you want to go. You might have something like Google Maps to hand, but that doesn\u2019t mean you won\u2019t need help now and again, especially if you need to know where something is in a store, for example. Learning left, right, and straight ahead should be enough to get you where you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"3-out-and-about-\"><strong>Out and about<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Quant val aix\u00f2? &#8211; How much does this cost?<\/li><li>Qu\u00e8 \u00e9s aix\u00f2? &#8211; What is this?<\/li><li>Voldria comprar aix\u00f2. &#8211; I\u2019d like to buy this.<\/li><li>El compte, si us plau. &#8211; The bill, please.<\/li><li>Bon profit! &#8211; Enjoy your meal!<\/li><li>Voldria un caf\u00e8, si us plau. &#8211; I\u2019d like a coffee, please.<\/li><li>Qu\u00e8 voldr\u00e0 per beure? &#8211; What would you like to drink?<\/li><li>Qu\u00e8 voldr\u00e0 menjar? &#8211; What would you like to eat?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Like to shop, eat out, visit museums or do any other leisure activity? Look no further than these phrases! The expression <em>voldria<\/em> means \u2018I would like\u2019, which is a useful one to know.
