Kannada is the official language of the Indian state of Karnataka. Kannada speakers also live in other parts of India, including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Kannada is a relative of Tamil and has very similar grammar to it, but also has Sanskrit influences on grammar and vocabulary. Its various dialects also borrow from the languages that neighbour them. While the written language is fairly standardised, there are up to 20 spoken dialects.
