Thai is the official language of Thailand and acts as a common tongue for speakers of the country’s 70 other languages. About 20 million Thais speak the language natively, and over three quarters of the population speak it as either a first or second language. Thai is most closely related to Lao, the official language of Laos - in fact, the dialects from north east Thailand are similar enough to be understood by speakers of Lao. Sanskrit, Old Khmer and Pali have all influenced the Thai language.
