Ukrainian, known as українська мова, is an official language in Ukraine. There are also about 10 million speakers in other parts of the world, including Russia, the US and Canada. In Ukraine, Ukrainian is spoken mostly in the west and centre, with Russian being more widely spoken in the south and east. The capital, Kiev, used to be mostly Russian speaking but nowadays Ukrainian is commonly spoken too, and official signs and announcements will be in Ukrainian.
