About German

German is an official language in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Switzerland and South Tyrol. Over 90 million people speak German as a first language and 30 million as a second language. German is closely related to Dutch, English and Frisian. Standard German, which uTalk teaches, is also known as Hochdeutsch or High German. There are also many Low German dialects, which are not all understandable to speakers of High German. The terms low and high refer to the geographical areas that these dialects originally came from.
