About Russian

Russian is an official language in Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan. It is also widely used across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Of all the Slavic languages, Russian has the highest number of speakers. It is closely related to Ukrainian and Belarusian. Russian has not always been the official language of Russia - French and German were historically spoken by the nobility - and the language only started to become standardised during its Golden Age of literature in the 1800s. uTalk features native speakers from Moscow.

Fun facts — Russian

  • Russian was the first language spoken in outer space - by Yuri Gagarin - and nowadays NASA astronauts have to learn Russian.
  • Russian has two colour blues - синий for dark blue and голубой for light blue.
  • It's important to put the stress on the right syllable in Russian, otherwise the meaning can completely change. For example, the word замок (zamok) means 'castle' when the first syllable is stressed, but 'lock' when the second is stressed.
  • A sputnik (the name given to an unmanned Soviet satellite) literally means ‘fellow traveller’ in Russian.
