Quechua, once the official language of the Inca Empire, is a diverse family of Indigenous languages spoken throughout the Andes in South America. Its origins go back a thousand years before the Incas, to the Wari Empire. Today, around seven million people speak some variety of Quechua. It is the main indigenous language in highland Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, and is also spoken by smaller communities in parts of Colombia and Argentina. These regional varieties are not all mutually intelligible. uTalk recorded native speakers from Cuzco with support from Peru’s Radio RPP, PUCP University, and the Ministry of Education. While there are some differences, this variety is generally well understood across southern Peru and in Bolivia.
