Fun facts about English (Australian)

Australian English has some unique vocabulary- for example, 'lollies' are sweets, a 'doona' is a duvet, and a 'barbie' is a barbecue.

A slang phrase you're likely to hear a lot in Australia is 'G’day', an abbreviation of 'Good day'. If someone says 'G'day mate', it doesn't necessarily mean you're friends- this is a standard casual greeting.

Australian English borrows some words from indigenous Australian languages, such as dingo and boomerang (from Dharug) and kangaroo (from Guugu Yimidhirr).
