Ukrainian, known as українська мова, is an official language in Ukraine and Transnistria. There are also about 10 million speakers in other parts of the world, including Russia, the US and Canada. In Ukraine, Ukrainian is spoken mostly in the west and centre, with Russian being more widely spoken in the south and east. The capital, Kiev, used to be mostly Russian speaking but nowadays Ukrainian is commonly spoken too, and official signs and announcements will be in Ukrainian.

Ukrainian is the world's third most beautiful language, according to a competition held in 1934 in Paris.

The most commonly-used letter in the Ukrainian language is 'П' (P), whole sentences can be written just with words beginning with the letter 'P'!

The word for 'ugly' is уродливый - urodlivyy - in Russian but the similar-sounding вродливий - vrodlivyy - is 'handsome' in Ukrainian.
