Learn Shona

Shona is one of many Bantu languages that cover a huge geographical area of sub Saharan Africa. They come from an oral tradition and uTalk has the widest range of them to learn in the market. Nouns are classified differently, for example according to whether they're an animal, plant, or human and this can change the way a sentence works. But don't worry you’ll soon get the hang of it.§

Fun facts about Shona

The language has borrowed many words from other languages such as 'yunivhesiti' - university - and 'motokari' - car - from English.

Clapping your hands is a gesture which accompanies greetings and can also mean thank you. Men clap with flat hands and women clap with cupped hands.§

A Shona proverb says, 'it's a marvel to see a leopard playing with a goat' - manenji kuona kamba ichitamba nembudzi - which suggests that something suspicious is going on!
