Swiss German refers to the many various dialects spoken in Switzerland, and is not to be confused with Standard Swiss German (the written version of one of Switzerland’s four official languages). Swiss German is spoken by around 5 million Swiss - nearly two thirds of the population. You will be understood if you speak Standard German but there are lots of differences that might make it worth learning the local Swiss dialect if you plan to spend time in Switzerland.
