How our Fijian lessons work

Your language learning journey should be simple. Start with basic greetings and high-frequency words, such as "bula", before moving on to family, numbers, essential phrases and other practical topics. Lessons are short, fun and designed for beginners. You'll practise with native speaker audio and be tested on what you've learnt to make sure you remember it. Review sessions adapt to you by testing you more on the words you get wrong.

Pick a category, and the app suggests a helpful order so beginners can see quick progress. The app automatically defaults to the language of your device, or you can choose another language to learn Fijian from if you prefer. You can learn online or offline, and you can use uTalk on your mobile or desktop. Change categories any time, and follow the path that best suits your goals. If you have questions, contact our UK-based team for support - see the in-app help page for details.

Fijian vs. Fiji Hindi vs. English

A quick guide on the differences between Fijian, Fiji Hindi and English

Get Started Comparing Fijian image

Key points

  • Standard Fijian (vosa vakaviti) comes from the Fijian island of Bau and is one of three official languages in Fiji, alongside English and Fiji Hindi. It's the first language for over half of Fiji's population (around 350,000 people) and a second language for another 200,000. The Fijian language is also spoken by several thousand people in New Zealand.
  • Fiji Hindi is a different language, spoken primarily by the Indo-Fijian community. It developed from languages brought to the islands by Indian labourers in the 19th century.
  • English is widely used in Fiji for education, government and business, but learning Fijian helps you connect more deeply with local culture and the indigenous Fijian community, called iTaukei.

How Fijian compares with other Pacific languages

  • Standard Fijian is spoken primarily in Fiji and by Fijian communities in New Zealand and Australia. Millions of people across the Pacific speak related languages, so learning Fijian opens doors to understanding the wider region.
  • Fijian is related to Samoan, Tongan, Hawaiian and Māori If you learn Fijian, you'll notice some familiar patterns when you encounter other Oceanic languages, but they're not mutually understandable. Each language has its own vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
  • There are many languages used across the Pacific. uTalk supports 150+ languages (including Samoan, Hawaiian, Māori and Tok Pisin) so you can compare options and even learn more than one if you like.

Yes. uTalk works for speakers of more than 140 languages. Choose the one that suits you in Settings.

Topics are based on real life situations. You can select any category and the app suggests a smart learning order for beginners. You can change it at any time.

YouTube can be useful, but it’s hard to check pronunciation or get structured reviews. uTalk gives you native speaker audio, games that test tricky words more often and a clear path from basic to practical use.

Yes, Fijian is related to Samoan and Tongan. They're all part of the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, but they're not mutually understandable. Each language has its own vocabulary and grammar.

Fijian uses familiar letters from the Latin alphabet, but they represent different sounds than in English. The letter 'd' sounds like 'nd', 'c' sounds like 'th' and 'q' sounds like 'ng'. uTalk's native speaker audio enables you to understand these patterns and master the sounds.

Short, regular sessions work best. Many learners can handle simple conversations after a few weeks of steady practice. However, your speed depends on how often you use the app and how much you review.
