Persian vs. Farsi vs. Dari

Here’s a quick breakdown on the differences between the Persian, Farsi and Dari languages.

Get Started Comparing Persian image

Key points

  • Persian is the formal name for a group of closely related and largely mutually intelligible varieties spoken by over 110 million people across Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and diaspora communities worldwide. It belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family.
  • In Iran, people call their language Farsi, which is simply the Persian word for Persian. In English, the language is traditionally known as Persian. They refer to the same language.
  • Dari is the variety of Persian spoken in Afghanistan. It shares its grammar and roots with Iranian Persian, but its vocabulary and pronunciation has been influenced by Pashto.
  • Tajiki is the variety of Persian spoken in Tajikistan. It's written in Cyrillic script rather than the Persian alphabet and is influenced by Russian vocabulary.
  • uTalk teaches Standard Persian from Iran, so it's the contemporary Persian spoken in Tehran and understood across Iran.
