Explore the Uralic language family

Hungarian is a Uralic language and a fascinating puzzle to many language experts. Despite being spoken in Central Europe, it is not related to the Indo-European languages spoken in the seven countries surrounding Hungary. Its closest living relatives are generally considered to be Khanty and Mansi, spoken in western Siberia. This suggests that the ancestors of Hungarian speakers likely migrated westward over many centuries before settling in the Carpathian Basin.

If you enjoy Hungarian, you might also be intrigued by its distant relatives, such as Finnish, Estonian and Southern Saami.
