Fun facts | Arabic (Gulf)

  • Gulf Arabic has borrowed many English words and changed them beyond recognition. One of these is 'drewel' meaning 'driver'!
  • The Emirati Arabic phrase 'Khalli walli' خلـّي ولـّي means 'so what?', but with a ruder tone it could also mean 'get lost!'
  • Be careful with the Arabic word طرّش (pronounced 'tarresh'). It means 'to send' in Kuwait and the UAE, 'to vomit' in Saudi Arabia, 'to splash' in Syria and Lebanon and 'to deafen' in Tunisia! Telling someone in the region to 'send me a message' can therefore get quite complicated indeed!

Start with basic greetings and high-frequency Arabic words, and then progress to practical categories such as family, numbers and essential phrases for everyday conversations. Lessons are short, engaging and created for beginners. You'll practise with native-speaker audio from the UAE and be tested on what you've learned to create stronger memories. Review sessions adapt to your individual progress by testing you more often on the words you get wrong.

The app automatically defaults to the language of your device, or you can choose another of our 140+ other languages to learn from. You can learn Arabic online or offline, and you can use uTalk on your mobile or desktop. Change topics at any time to follow whichever path suits your goals. Track your progress, build your vocabulary and develop your language skills at your own pace. If you have any questions, you can contact support. Gulf Arabic vs Modern Standard Arabic vs Egyptian Arabic

Not all Arabic is the same — here’s how Gulf Arabic compares to other major varieties:

Get Started Comparing Arabic (Gulf) image

Key points

  • Gulf Arabic (also called Khaleeji Arabic) is the spoken dialect of Arabic used throughout the Gulf countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and parts of southern Iraq. This is the language people actually speak in their daily lives in the Gulf region.
  • Modern Standard Arabic is the formal written Arabic language you'll find in newspapers, official documents and the Quran. It's not used in everyday conversations, so if you want to chat with people in Dubai or Kuwait, you'll need to know the Gulf dialect, not Modern Standard Arabic.
  • Egyptian Arabic is a different spoken dialect that's used in Egypt. While Arabic dialects share the Arabic alphabet and Arabic script, Gulf Arabic and Egyptian Arabic have different pronunciation, vocabulary and expressions. Learning Gulf Arabic helps you communicate specifically in the Gulf Arab countries.

How Gulf Arabic compares with other languages in the region

  • Gulf Arabic is widely spoken across Eastern Arabia, particularly in the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and much of Saudi Arabia. Millions of people use this spoken language every day, so learning it can open doors throughout the Gulf region.
  • Hebrew, Kurdish and Armenian are also spoken in parts of the broader Middle East, though they belong to different language families and have different cultural contexts. If you're interested in the Gulf countries, then Gulf Arabic is your best choice for everyday communication.
  • uTalk supports 150+ languages so you can explore options and even learn more than one if you like.
