One common Punjabi saying is 'Wife and food, one should never speak ill of these two'.

Punjabi is one of the very few languages in South Asia that has tones: 'kora' when spoken with different intonations can mean either 'horse', 'leper' or 'whip'!

The script used to write Indian Punjabi is Gurmukhi, which means 'from the mouth of the Guru'.

The name comes from the Persian for ‘five’ (panj) and ‘ab’ (water), referring to the five tributaries of the Punjab region.
