Fun facts | French

  • In French ‘une baguette’ literally means ‘a stick’, so a magic wand (as in the story Harry Potter) translates as ‘une baguette magique’ and chopsticks as ‘les baguettes chinoises’.
  • If someone says 'la moutarde me monte au nez' - the mustard is going up my nose - it means they're getting angry.
  • In Maori, the aboriginal language of New Zealand, France is known as ‘wiwi’ from the French for yes, yes, ‘oui, oui’!
  • The Académie française, established in 1635, has the task of keeping an eye on the French language and making sure not too many English words sneak in. One example of its success has been to install 'ordinateur' and 'courriel' instead of the English 'computer' and 'e-mail'.

Understanding French and Canadian French

Here’s how standard French and Canadian French fit together, and what you’ll learn with uTalk.

Get Started Comparing French image

Key points

  • French is spoken across France, parts of Switzerland and Belgium, and in many other countries worldwide. It’s one of the most studied languages globally, helping people enhance their careers, travel the world and explore different cultures.
  • Canadian refers to the variety spoken in Canada, particularly Quebec. While mutually intelligible with standard French, it has its distinct pronunciation, vocabulary and expressions that have been shaped by centuries of Canadian development.
  • uTalk teaches both versions of French. Simply choose your preferred dialect when you get started.

French and its European neighbours

  • French is a Romance language, closely related to Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. It is also related to Canadian French which derived from the 17th and 18th-century language spoken by French settlers who emigrated to Canada over 300 years ago. If you’ve studied any of these, you’ll probably be able to spot familiar vocabulary and grammar patterns, which can make learning French easier.
  • France shares borders with eight European countries, and uTalk supports many nearby languages, including German, Luxembourgish, Catalan, Spanish, Italian and Flemish (Belgium Dutch). Understanding the regional context helps you appreciate how French and other languages have developed across Europe.
  • Don’t forget that there are dozens of other languages across Europe. uTalk offers courses on more than 150 languages worldwide, so check out all the options and maybe even learn a few at a time.

That’s why we’ve recorded native French speakers so that you can learn the language as it’s actually spoken. Our practical lessons will soon get you enjoying short conversations, rather than studying long grammar rules."
