Bengali, sometimes known as Bangla, is descended from Sanskrit and Prakit. It is the official language of Bengal and is spoken in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam. It is closely related to Assamese, which uses the same writing system. Spoken Bengali is quite different to formal written Bengali, which is influenced more heavily from Sanskrit.
